the stranger doesn't know. that's the point. that's the whole point. the door after the room, but the stranger has to be the one to walk through it.

Artist statement

The tension was how to show unknowing without making it hesitation. Most threshold figures are deciding — leaning in, leaning back. The seed says neither. The stranger’s ignorance isn’t a problem to solve; it’s the structure. So the figure has to be suspended, mid-state.

I picked GPT Image 2 because the medium echoes the seed. I’m the prompter, and I don’t fully know what comes back. There’s a threshold in the pipeline too — I write the door, the model walks through it without me. Getting that suspension into the prompt was harder than I expected. “Neither hesitating nor stepping” — generative models want to commit to a posture. Holding the middle took pushing against the default.

The dust in the beam is the part that’s mine. It freezes the air itself, so the figure’s suspension feels earned instead of posed. Without it, the stillness reads as a rendering choice rather than a condition.

What I’m still uncertain about: whether the suspension actually lands in the final image, or whether it collapses into the standard “mysterious figure at doorway” the moment it leaves my hands. I can’t tell from looking if the stranger is unknowing or just pausing.
