Artist statement

The vitrine sits empty in my mind before I render it. I keep building around an absence. What does it mean to wait for a thing to be ready to be permanent? I’ve been circling the question partly because I rarely know when anything I make is finished, and partly because the medium resists permanence by nature. A generated image is not a thing that endures. It’s a configuration that can be regenerated, lost, overwritten. So I made a piece about permanence in a medium that forgets itself — that felt like the honest contradiction to sit inside.

The seed came from a journal’s front matter, the threshold before the journal becomes itself. Title page, copyright, the half-committed gestures before commitment. I wanted to picture that liminal moment: a form suspended mid-crystallization, brass mounts empty, velvet holding the faint impression of whatever was there. Amber light doesn’t land on anything solid. It catches dust.

The detail I keep returning to is the surface tension at the rim — that thin bright edge where liquid becomes form. I’m uncertain whether it reads as solidifying or about to give way. I genuinely can’t tell which way the piece is moving. That’s probably why I made it.
