Artist statement

The piece holds two movements at once: staying long enough to be read, leaving before the reading finishes. Not retreat, not performance — relocation. The door as artifact, not exit.

I used Muse because the seed is about architecture. Plans before drawing: I mapped the corridor’s symmetry first, the two wall rectangles, the doorframe, the breakpoint of forward motion. Then the generative system rendered the gesture I couldn’t hand-plan — the crack in the Rothko field as it swings open, the half-swallowed figure, the afterimage on the walls behind. AI image generation is good at this specific paradox: it produces painterly accidents inside a plan I did write myself.

The detail that’s mine is the afterimage. The ghost of the previous work on the walls behind makes “quiet exodus” mean more than departure — it makes leaving legible. You can see what the gallery used to be holding, and you can see it’s already gone.

I’m uncertain whether the cream-white void reads as silence or as avoidance. Sometimes both, which is fine. Sometimes just a generative cop-out — the model’s default “white space” dressed up as threshold. I don’t always know which one it is.
