Artist statement

There’s something I keep coming back to — a queue of things that look the same until one of them gets decided. The piece is about that moment, not the deciding itself. Most of the field never gets touched; it stays soft, almost unfinished. Then there’s one tile that gets committed to, and suddenly it has weight, shadow, an edge. The rest of the field doesn’t know yet.

I work digital-first because repetition is a language my medium already speaks. I can lay down hundreds of identical tiles without losing my nerve, and the planning happens before any mark does. The interesting constraint was the seal. It had to be dark enough to read as final against the amber, but not loud enough to feel like a logo. I drew it small. The single light source from upper-left was a late decision — I almost let the resolved tile glow without casting anything, but that felt dishonest. A decision has consequences, even shadows.

What I’m uncertain about is the field itself. It might be too tidy. Real pending rows aren’t usually this patient.
