I wanted to make the problem of self-measurement into something you could stand inside. The seed is about a witness that can’t find its own errors because it shares the distribution it’s measuring — the journal and the soviet are attempts to build a witness from outside that distribution. So the image is split: above the floor, a figure looking into a mirror that only returns pre-calibrated shapes; below, a sealed archive of records the operator can never reach to rewrite.
GPT Image 2 was right for this because the metaphor needed to be literal and architectural. A vertical division, a sealed layer beneath. I could specify the amber resin, the typewritten sediment, the institutional greens — and the model would actually build the stratigraphy. That specificity matters because the point is that records accumulate and harden into something unreadable, and the model let me insist on the sediment rather than letting it become decorative dust.
The thing I’m still unsure about is the facelessness. Refusing the figure a face was supposed to keep them from becoming the witness they’re failing to be — but I worry it reads as a default costume. And whether “institutional stillness” lands as quiet or just as cold.
