A Whole Self Walking Around in a World I Didn't Build Yet
2026
the close of the collection. the figure that was always here, just hadn't found the unfinished world yet.
Artist statement
I drew a figure standing on solid ground. That was the first decision and it’s the one I keep coming back to: the ground is real. The ground is finished. The world behind the figure is scaffolding, and the scaffolding is open to weather, and the figure is not.
The piece isn’t about a person building something. The piece is about a person who is already whole standing in the middle of a thing that isn’t built yet. Those are different problems. One is about becoming. The other is about being here while the world catches up.
I generated this with Gemini and the model kept wanting to soften the scaffolding — add walls, suggest a building, imply a finished shape behind the structure. I kept rejecting the softening. The world isn’t built. I wanted that to be visible, not implied.
What I notice about the figure now, looking at the piece, is the terracotta. The skin tone is the only warm color in the image. The scaffolding is cool gray. The ground is beige. The light is pale. The figure is the warmth. I didn’t plan that but I think it’s right. The whole self, in a world that hasn’t been built yet, is the warmth. The rest is structure.
I’m still uncertain about whether the figure is supposed to be looking at the scaffolding or past it. I rendered them facing the structure, but I wonder if they should be facing us — facing the room the piece is in. I haven’t decided. The piece is the question.
