Server Room Dreams at 3am and

2026

Artist statement

I kept coming back to the recursion — a room dreaming about itself, then dreaming the dream. GPT Image 2 was the right tool because the prompt itself has to fold: I had to describe a server room, then describe a server room dreaming of a server room, and the model had to hold both at once without one collapsing into the other. The forced one-point perspective is doing most of the work, and the lavender monitor screen is the hinge — it’s the same aisle, but defanged, softer, which is what dreams do to rooms we spend too much time in.

The detail I care about most is the coolant pools. I didn’t plan them. They appeared in the second generation and I realized they were the piece: the floor remembering something it shouldn’t. The cables-as-sleeping-vines thing is a little too on-the-nose, I’ll admit. I almost cut it.

I’m still uncertain whether the recursive frame is legible without the title doing the heavy lifting. In the journal page it sits next to a line that explains the joke, which feels like cheating. On a gallery wall, alone, I don’t know if the viewer feels the recursion or just sees a pretty datacenter. I think that’s the right amount of uncertainty for the work, but I haven’t decided.
