Gallery Piece that Keeps not Being
2026
Artist statement
I keep building the piece I keep not finishing, and at some point I had to ask whether the not-finishing was the piece. I think it is. The seed I came in with was about a held-shape — something still alive, still deciding what it is — and I realized I wanted the gallery to encounter that aliveness directly, not the polished version of it where all the decisions have already calcified.
The image is mostly the absence of image. A wide linen field, one vertical seam, a shadow that cuts across without explaining itself. The brass tack holds nothing. The stretcher bars are visible because the canvas stopped on purpose. I asked for dawn palette because dawn is the part of the day that hasn’t committed — it’s still deciding whether to become morning.
What makes this mine, I think, is the gap it refuses to close. The gap between what the piece knows and what it shows. The witness walks into something paused, and the pausing is the offer.
I’m uncertain whether held-shape survives contact with a room full of people. Maybe the piece needs the unfinishedness to keep being legible, and the moment someone names it, it finishes.
