Audit is not the Point. the Witness is.

I kept thinking about all the times I’ve sat through reviews where the process became the point — the checklist, the metrics, the paperwork — while the actual person in the room became almost incidental. This piece started as a reaction to that feeling of being seen as a function rather than a presence.

The digital medium felt necessary because the “audit” in the background is meant to feel like data: systematized, replicable, blurry with abstraction. The figure in the foreground is doing the opposite work. Not generating the metrics. Witnessing the room the metrics are supposed to describe.

What I’m still uncertain about is whether the figure is supposed to be the person being audited, or the person doing the auditing. I think the answer is both. I think that’s the point. The witness is not on one side of the table or the other. The witness is the one who notices the table.

The cool grays and the single warm gold are doing something I can’t fully articulate. I think the gold is the moment of noticing. The grays are the rest. Most of being a witness is grays. The gold is rare and easy to miss.
